OPIRG’s Eat Local project had an urban fruit picking session at the heritage apple trees at Dundurn Castle Thursday (S.22). Volunteers from McMaster and the community came together to learn how to gather the apples using the most effective and safe equipment – a cross between a lacrosse stick and a butterfly net.

Three homeschool families participated and took home some of the fruit. They also toured Dundurn Castle’s heritage garden site.

The fruit picking activity was filmed and particpants interviewed for a nation-wide study/film on food security.

Much fruit in the city goes to waste – the fruit tree project rescues the fruit and gives some to the tree owners, some to the pickers and some to area food-banks.
