Applications for 2021 Semester in Residence are Open
Offered each fall semester, CityLAB Semester in Residence is a 15-unit course designed for passionate, motivated, and enthusiastic students. If you want to learn from the community, apply your studies to make change, and expand your personal and professional networks, then this is the course for you!
Students and staff from the City of Hamilton co-create and design an innovative real-world project to address the problem, gaining valuable insight and data that can be shared and potentially scaled up. Students in any faculty from McMaster are welcome to apply.
Semester in Residence in a pandemic
The most common question students are asking about our 15-unit Semester in Residence at CityLAB is regarding the format: will it be in-person? or will it be virtual?
We want to acknowledge that there’s a lot still up in the air, but, with McMaster indicating some in-person classes for the fall, we remain hopeful. We are also aware that students are rightfully feeling some fatigue and the uncertainty that comes with living through an evolving health crisis in this pandemic.
We’ve had success running the Semester in Residence (SIR) both in-person and fully online. Both formats allowed us to apply learning with meaningful action on important city priorities. For the fall 2021 SIR we are looking at a hybrid model, which we hope will bring the best of the two types of experiences together.
The benefit of a small and agile program like ours is that we work in small teams (5 or 6 students), and do a lot of work outside where we can meet and travel to experience the city we are working to understand and improve.
With these considerations in mind, we are keeping applications open on an ongoing basis, so students can make choices based on the latest information. We encourage you to weigh your options, and to reach out for updates or to get any of your questions answered.
Thanks for working through this with us, and we hope to see a new and ready-for-action 2021 SIR cohort.
