Every year since 2014, OPIRG McMaster has an opportunity to address the SRA under a provision in the Student Union’s Bylaw5.

Each year OPIRG’s Board representatives have presented slides and answered the SRA’s questions.

OPIRG’s commitment to financial transparency and for fulfilling our mandate to serve students who are interested in taking action on important public interest issues have been well received each time.

The McMaster Student Union (MSU) Student Representative Assembly (SRA) members who crafted the Bylaw, including Daniel D’Angela and VP Finance Scott Mallon praised OPIRG in 2014.  Mallon praised OPIRG’s financial transparency and good work we do on campus.

ByLaw 5

  • 3.1.1 Annual provision of financial statements to the Vice-President (Finance) by October 15, in
    a similar manner as submitted to the University, notwithstanding any accommodation provided by the SRA Standing Committee on Finance;

  • 3.1.2 Maintenance of easily accessible online financial reporting;

  • 3.1.2.1 Any group which falls under the Financial Accountability Policy for Student Organizations can follow University guidelines for online financial reporting;

  • 3.1.3 Administration of the fee appropriately and in accordance with the original referendum or General Assembly motion that instituted the fee.

  • 3.4 If the SRA Standing Committee on Finance determines that an organization has failed to meet the requirements outlined in Section 3.1 of this bylaw, a motion for referendum for that fee must be submitted to the SRA for consideration.

OPIRG McMaster has always met or exceeded each provision of Bylaw 5.

We’ve got a lot to be proud of, and we are, and should always be, open to well-meant critiques in the interest of best serving the students who make OPIRG a viable and impactful organization at McMaster, and the wider community.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Just as we help students become better-engaged on social and environmental issues, we hope you can engage in a little democratic action here.

Given your experience with OPIRG as a volunteer, as a member of a working group, or someone who has used our resources, attended events or workshops, or received financial or promotional support, we encourage you to let your faculty representative on the SRA know why you support OPIRG.

If you can, please come to the SRA meeting Sunday (November 12, 2017) at 5:00 PM in Gilmour Hall Council Chambers (GH 111) and support OPIRG’s presenters. Showing up is a powerful act!

Thank you in advance for your support!

OPIRG is an impactful organization

Daniel D’Angela, MSU Standing Committee on Finance (2013-2014)
